Harbor Seal is commonly called as ‘common seal’. The scientific name of these seals is Phoca vitulina. These belong to the family of Phocidae and Genus Phoca.
These seals are found in arctic and temperate waters of the Northern Hemisphere. They like to rest upon the rocky islands, mudflats, bays and sandy beaches. Harbour seals can be identified in different colours such as Brown, Silver, White, Tan and Grey etc.
There are five more subspecies of Phoca vitulina:
• Eastern Atlantic common seals
• Western Atlantic common seals
• Ungava seals (Lacs des Loups Marins seals)
• Pacific common seals
• Insular seals
